Moisture-Resistant Plasterboard: Where It Belongs

Green paper-faced board is a useful part of a moisture-management strategy, but it is not a substitute for waterproof construction.

Blue moisture-resistant plasterboard production stack

Moisture-resistant plasterboard is commonly specified for areas with intermittent humidity such as kitchens, utility rooms and bathroom walls outside direct water exposure. Product selection must still follow the project system and local installation guidance.

What moisture resistance does

The treated core and facing help the board perform better in humid conditions than a regular board. They do not make the board suitable for permanent water contact, leaking substrates or unsealed shower zones.

Coordinate the surrounding layers

  • Control water at the source with correct plumbing and waterproofing.
  • Use suitable fasteners and joint materials for the environment.
  • Keep boards dry, flat and protected before installation.
  • Ventilate the room and prevent condensation buildup.

Dimensions and edge selection

DecisionQuestion to confirm
ThicknessDoes the wall or ceiling system require a specific thickness?
Width and lengthCan the site handle the selected sheet safely?
Tapered edgeWill the joints be taped and finished flush?
Use moisture-resistant board as part of a complete detail. Always verify the exact exposure level and assembly with the project designer.
