Square Edge vs Tapered Edge Plasterboard

Edge profile affects joint treatment, labor, finish tolerance and the appearance of the completed surface.

Standard plasterboard sheets with finished edges

Square edge boards meet with a straight face and are useful where the joint is hidden, detailed with a trim or finished by a method designed for that profile. Tapered edge boards create a shallow recess for tape and joint compound.

Choose the edge with the finish in mind

EdgeCommon planning direction
Square EdgeSimple edges, concealed joints, trims or selected ceiling details.
Tapered EdgeTaped and jointed surfaces requiring a flatter finish.
Tegular or special edgeModular ceiling panels installed into a compatible grid.

Do not mix profiles casually

Changing edge profile after production can affect the jointing method and visual alignment. Put the edge requirement on the purchase order and sample approval.

Sample before bulk approval

Build a small mock-up using the proposed tape, compound, screws and finish. This exposes joint shadows and edge mismatches before the complete shipment arrives.

The edge field is a small line in a datasheet, but it has a large effect on installation and finish quality.
